My name is Joyce McMillan, and in December 2025, I was diagnosed with lung cancer. Hearing those words was frightening and overwhelming, and I knew I was facing a difficult road ahead.

Thankfully, I was introduced to Dr. Samer Kannan, and from my very first meeting with him, I knew I was in caring hands. He was warm, compassionate, and incredibly patient with me. He took the time to explain everything-not only the lung surgery he would perform, but also another procedure I needed before my lung surgery. He explained each step in a way that I could understand and never made me feel rushed or like just another patient.

Going through cancer is scary, but having a surgeon who makes you feel safe, heard, and cared for can make an enormous difference. Dr. Kannan gave me confidence during a time when I had so many fears and uncertainties. His kindness and genuine concern helped me feel comfortable putting my trust in him.

What stood out to me most was that Dr. Kannan didn't make me feel like I was simply a diagnosis or a surgery on a schedule. He made me feel like a person. I truly felt that he cared about me and wanted me to feel comfortable and informed every step of the way.

Dr. Kannan is more than a doctor. He is a compassionate human being who brings warmth and kindness to his patients when they need it most. I will always be grateful that he was the surgeon who cared for me during one of the most frightening times of my life. I met Dr. Kanaan 5 years ago. We first met after a biopsy confirmed I had lung cancer. I was referred to him by my oncologist so that he could perform a robotic lung resection (partial).

I was extremely afraid of the diagnosis and apprehensive of the surgery and potential outcomes. Before my surgery, Dr. Kanaan and I met and he took the time to explain the surgical technique that would be used. He was very reassuring, kind, and patient. He listened to and answered all my questions. My fear of the surgery dissipated due to his confidence in the approach and years of experience he had with robotic surgery. I could feel his compassion-a trait he carries to this day. I have scans every 6 months through City of Hope and I still ask Dr. Kanaan to look it over in addition to my other doctors. I trust and rely on his opinion. I feel welcome and valued as a patient and as a person. My family and I wholeheartedly trust him. I will continue my care with him for my treatment for lung cancer and pulmonary issues (COPD). I am so very grateful that he is my doctor.

I have been working with Dr. Kanaan for the past 5 years when I started practicing medical oncology in Orange County. Dr. Kanaan has been my Doctor since early 2022 when my annual ct scan (former smoker) showed up with a ground glass appearance in my upper right lung

I had a biopsy done and the results showed no cancer but there definitely was something in there

Over the course of 4 years, I have had many more ct scans ordered by Dr Kanaan and hav had many conversations with him regarding my care

To date, my last ct scan, per Dr. Kanaan was the best one ever, we still don't know what it is but I have the best Dr. in the world and total faith in him.

My next ct scan is in December, hopefully what's there will be gone, but I don't worry because I know I'm in good hands

Upon receiving some pretty frightening news regarding Cancer of the esophagus I then had to make the decision of finding a surgeon who could perform the surgery to have the cancer removed.

I originally met with a specific surgeon and interviewed with him, leaving his office my wife & myself did not feel at ease with this Doctor.

My medical provider listed some other surgeons & that is when I saw Dr Kanann. After reading his reviews We made an appointment to meet with him.

Upon our visit & interview with Dr Kanann we had not only that assurance but the peace & confirmation that he would have the hands to perform our surgery.

Dr Kanann was very unarming & had a assuring warm presence. His staff of Evelyn & the office were as well very professional.

Surgery was performed 8/17/2025 (robotically) flawless.

There were no margins of cancer upon Surgery & I am currently in remission, Dr kept me in ICU for (6) days for precautionary reasons & then I was sent home on day (7) We are very blessed that we chose the right surgeon & continue some follow up care with him today. I want to take a moment to reflect on my lung surgery and follow up on October, 2025. I really appreciate your professionalism on how you and Dr. Petty were going about on my potential lung surgery. You explained the process by Dr. Petty taking a biopsy, and you and her would determine if the mass was cancerous, and if it was what the procedure would be at the time of the surgery. If the mass was cancer or another infection and had to be removed you said you would be the one to remove it and what the follow up would be. You explained the potential risks. You explained that you had extensive experience and you would be using robotic precision equipment.

I was fortunate that it was not cancer but was a mass that had to be removed. My recovery was minimal and I was only in the hospital for two days. Since the operation I have not had any further loss of breathing capacity and shortness of breath.

Thank you so much for professionalism, attentiveness and thoroughness of the entire process. I love the office visit when you said “no cancer and I will not have to see you again.”

They went on and on about how incredible the doctor was, so precise, so careful, and trying to get every bit of the cancer that he could. The cancer turned out to be much larger than earlier tests revealed. They said it was like he was on a treasure hunt and couldn't leave anything behind! They were in complete awe!

Yes, the doctor was Dr. Kanaan, and the patient was my dad! To this day, Dad is happy and healthy and still has his follow ups every 6 months. Our dad and our whole family received the very finest, compassionate and expert care from Dr Kanaan. Dr. K. and his entire team have been a godsend.

I am a former US Navy Diver and former Orange County Deputy Sheriff.

While off the coast of Vietnam in 1972 I was affected by Agent Orange and sometime later found out I had lung cancer.

This is when I met Dr. Kanaan. He did a routine CT scan and found cancer in my left lung. He did not put me on any kind of cure all drugs, he wanted to go in and cut it out, which he did!

We did follow up scans over a few years and every time he called me. He always said "I am happy happy happy". How many Doctors do you have that say that!

Always a personal call from the doctor, always!!

Dr Kanaan is an absolutely wonderful human being and surgeon.

Every doctor I saw told me that I would never beat this cancer,

Dr. Kanaan was referred to me by my ENT Specialist after a lesion was discovered by PET Scan in my Right Upper Lung Lobe. This was a surprise as the focus of my diagnosis was on Neck Cancer discovered just previously in Biopsy. My team, Medical Oncologist, ENT, Radiation Oncologist, Dr Kanaan Agreed the Lung had to be dealt with prior to moving ahead with Neck Cancer. Given very little notice of my lung cancer, I was very fortunate to get Dr.Kanaan as my surgeon. My surgery took place on June 29. Having just moved my life was in flux. His manner made the process of my preparing for surgery a calming experience & I trusted him explicitly. During hospital stay Dr Kanaan visited me often. My pain problems were relieved & I was up walking shortly. Now I am home and my nurse, Teri McPhillips, who drove me to the doctor's office, admires his "bedside" manner.

Dr. Kanaan is a rarity among doctors these days. He really does care about you as a person and not just a condition. He went above and beyond and out of his way to help me.
